Tip #1: Solid Technical Setup

When you start a blog, this is the very first step you need to take care of.

I’m a very technical person myself. I know a thing or two about programming and web development, so this is a topic I pay special attention to when I’m helping other bloggers start their journeys.

And let me tell you, I’ve seen some scary stuff during the past few years. Most bloggers just aren’t web developers – and that’s perfectly fine!

But the way some of us set up and configure their WordPress blogs… It just gets me speechless sometimes. Not that I didn’t make a bunch of mistakes along the way myself!

Trust me, it’s always worth your while to make sure your blog is properly set up for years to come. You will be working with it a lot, and you want to be able to focus on what really matters: creating great content for your readers and growing your blog.

If the technical setup is not 100% right, you will encounter problems sooner or later.

When you start a blog, you don’t want to struggle with any of the following:

  • Errors when trying to log in
  • Problems with your theme and design
  • Slow loading times for your visitors
  • Blog crashing when installing a new plugin
  • Missing content etc.

Surely, each of these problems can be solved – but it’s going to cost you valuable time and money. Therefore, why not make sure you can avoid these problems altogether? That’s possible only if you have a solid technical setup for your blog.

I don’t mean to scare you off from starting a blog – quite the opposite! I’m here to share what I’ve learned as a blogger and web designer so that you can enjoy a headache-free blogging journey from day 1.

Tip #2: Amazing Content – Post After Post

Needless to say, your blog’s content is the single most valuable and important part of achieving the goals you have with blogging. The content you produce is everything when it comes to successful blogging!

So what is great content like, then?

To get a few ideas about what to focus on, ask yourself:

  • What keeps my readers coming back?
  • Why are some of my posts more popular than others?
  • How can I help my readers?

The answer is rather simple: your readers find your content valuable. You help them with their problems or provide answers to their questions in one way or another on your blog.

Therefore, creating amazing content one post after the other is all about providing value to your readers. Remember that they are willing to spend their valuable time reading your blog because they find it helpful and useful.

How to write a great blog post:

So, is there a fool-proof recipe for writing great content?

If there’s one piece of advice I would give, it’s this: answer a question related to your blog’s topic that you’ve been asking yourself. The chances are that your readers out there have been asking the same question, too.

I mean, isn’t that what most of us use the Web and Google for – to find answers? All you have to do is provide one and your readers will thank you.

Surely, creating great blog posts is more than just writing an answer to a question. Don’t forget to keep these points in mind while writing:

  • How should you write?
  • Who are you writing for?
  • How can you make your posts easily readable?

Write with all the passion you have for your blog’s topic. Have a clear content plan and strategy from day 1 and stick to it.

Why? Just think about browsing though your favorite travel blog and suddenly seeing posts about pregnancy coaching and gardening tips in the blog feed. Not cool.

In short: provide value, stay focused and consistent, and put your heart into every post.

Tip #3: Solid Marketing and Promotion

We all know that it takes a great amount of determination, time, and effort to produce enough content to make it in the blogging world.

Once you’ve written a bunch of great blog posts to share with your readers, you really need to get your blog out there for the world to see!

I mean, your posts can be perfectly written and structured, with heaps of valuable information inside, but what good are they if nobody finds them in the first place?

Regardless of what your blog is about, there are probably heaps of other blogs out there about the exact same topic. The amount of information and content on the Web just blows my mind every time I read reports on the number of new blogs each month…

So how do you stand out from the masses? How can you make sure that the right visitors find their way to your blog and not the others on the same topic?

It’s all about marketing, baby!

Marketing is the #1 essential part of blogging many bloggers fail to succeed. There’s so much awesome, valuable content out there to be discovered by readers, but if they can’t find their way there, that content is lost and practically obsolete.

When you’re just starting out with your blog, marketing can feel somewhat superfluous and unnecessary – and a bit intimidating, too.

To make things easier for you, check out my previous post about the marketing tools I use for promoting my blogs. I’m sure you’ll find helpful information and useful ideas to use with your own blog.

Final Thoughts: Essential Blogging Tips for Success

So there you have it, these three building blocks are the very core of making sure your blog becomes a raging success!

They also give you a good idea about where you should start and what’s the next step after the other:

  1. Start with ensuring a solid technical setup for your blog
  2. Create awesome content on that solid platform
  3. Use the right marketing tools to promote that content to generate more traffic

If you follow through with all three steps, you’re destined for success, trust me.

Every blogger out there who has run into trouble and “retired” prematurely has gotten one of these three points wrong. Either their blogs were technically poorly constructed, they didn’t publish great content, or they neglected the importance of marketing and promotion.

So, take my advice and write down these three points to get it right the first time around!

Now that you know what’s coming at you, it’s time to pull out the big guns and start your blog! Follow my step-by-step guide for starting your first blog and you’ll be a proud blog owner in just 30 minutes.
