Choosing a name for your blog can get overwhelming, I know. The more you think about it, the more insecure you feel about your choice.

I’ve created a number of websites and blogs for myself and for my clients. If I’ve learned one thing, this is it:

All in all, blog and domain names don’t really matter that much. What matters way more is the content you create and how you promote it.

First: What is Your Blog Niche?

Of course, you’ll want to find the perfect niche for your blog before thinking about the name.

If you’re blogging about gardening, you don’t want to mention fishing, cars, or weightlifting in your blog name.

In case you haven’t found the perfect niche for your blog yet, check out my previous post: How to Find the Perfect Blogging Niche.

When you’ve found a niche you feel comfy with, let’s get started with that blog name!

What You Should Know Before Choosing a Name For Your Blog:

1: Your Blog Name Will Become Your Brand

This is why choosing the perfect blog name can feel so difficult. You’ll be spending a lot of time with it in the future, so you should really pick one you love.

As your blog grows and gains more traffic, it will automatically become a brand for you and your content. Your readers will start to recognize it and identify themselves with it.

Therefore, make sure you choose a blog name that your target audience can relate to.

2: Use a .com Domain Name For Your Blog

There’s heaps of different domain name extensions to choose from nowadays. Some of them work really well, but others are just silly and look unprofessional.

Want to play it safe for the long run? Then I recommend buying a “.com” domain for your first blog. They’re just easy to remember, they add trust and credibility to your blog, and they’re most often the cheapest ones to register.

However, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to find a .com domain name you want that’s free. There are just so many .com websites out there already.

If that’s the case for you, find and register a “.co” domain instead. It’s the closest you can get to a .com and since there aren’t that many .co domains registered, it’s easier to find one that is available.

3: What is the Best Domain Name For My Blog?

Any domain name can be good, but here are a few points you should consider when choosing a blog domain name:

  1. Is it easy to remember? Is it catchy? Your readers should know what your blog is about the second they see your domain name.
  2. Do you have to spell it out? If you need to spell your domain name to anyone, it’s probably too difficult. Don’t overthink it. You don’t want to be spelling it out letter by letter to everyone who’s asking how they can find it online.
  3. Is it unique? Choose a blog and domain name that represents who you are as a blogger and as a person. Make it unique and be creative! Remember, you need to stand out from the masses to become a successful blogger!

Nevertheless, try not to spend too much time on choosing the perfect domain name for your blog.

That said, let’s find you the perfect blog name next. This will only take 20 minutes and I’ll walk you through it step-by-step.

One More Tip: Find a Blog Name Using a Name Generator

Ok, so I know sometimes you just can’t come up with a catchy blog name with the steps above. There are just some days when your brain is not ready for a storm of any kind, I totally have days like that more than often enough.

If that sounds familiar, here’s one more tool you can use for blog and domain names: NameQL.com.

To use Name Mesh, just type 1-3 words into the search field and wait for the engine to come up with dozens or hundreds of creative name ideas for you.

It takes a bit of time to go through the lists, I know. They’re sometimes loooooong.

But there are always some pretty great ones in there. Just write a few good ones down and see which ones are free.

FAQ: How to Choose the Perfect Blog Name and Domain?

How to choose a domain name for my blog?

A good blog and domain name should be something you and your readers love.

Here are a few key points to adhere to:

  1. Keep it simple
  2. Make it clever (if you can)
  3. Reflect your business and brand
  4. Watch out for spelling (for example, www.FindTherapist.com could look like www.FindTheRapist.com – not good)
  5. Choose a .com domain name extension
  6. Don’t violate copyrights or trademarks

This should help you get going!

What is the BEST domain name?

In general, the best domain name is a .com domain. It’s easy to remember, inexpensive to register, and it adds trust and credibility to your blog with your readers.

Also, the best domain name is something that both you and your readers can identify with. It should represent you and your blog as a brand, and at the same time appeal to your target audience.

How can I register a domain name for my blog?

Registering a domain name for your blog is explained above under “How to buy a domain name for your blog”.

How much does a domain name cost?

The cost of a domain name depends on the domain name registrar you choose. Those are the providers that let you buy and sell website names, i.e. domains.

Each registrar charges slightly different prices for domain names.

When you start a blog, you only need one domain name for your blog. It usually costs anywhere between $8 to $20 per year.

My personal go-to favorite domain name registrar and blog hosting provider is Bluehost. When you sign up for hosting with them, you get 1 free domain name even with the most inexpensive hosting plan.
